MLDonkey 2.9.2 Real Simple

    October 29th, 2007 | Tags: , ,

Everybody was once a newbie in Linux command. I been through the terrors of following long set of commands, following guides just to get a simple thing up. How I wish there was one person/guru to help me then.

I decided to release a version of MLDonkey that is real simple to set up. Simply copy the files over and reboot your DNS-323. On boot up, the MLDonkey would be loaded along with fon’z funplug. Best of all, it is a small file, just slightly larger than the normal MLDonkey release.

In the future, if you need to upgrade to the next version of MLDonkey. Just kill the core and replace the necessary files (in /mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin).

Download MLDonkey 2.9.2 with funplug over at the MLDonkey for DNS-323 page.

Note: Do note that MLDonkey download some necessary files over the Internet on boot up give it around 2 to 3 minutes (after DNS-323 bootup) before you try going into the administration page.

    1. Hi shadow! I’ve found this blog by google…and i’ve only a word THANKS MAN!
Tomorrow i will receive my d-link-box and i want to install mldonkey.
I’m an IT-windows admin, but i’m a newbie with linux (i know only basic command and squid proxy). Anyway, i’ve see your “simple-install release”, but i’ve read that, is only compiled with torrent protocol, or exist a stupid-install version also with
edonkey protocol?? Many thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english:)

    2. Cipo_Italy, hi! Well, use the real simple release to get your mldonkey up first. Then if you need the full version, replace the mlnet in the lnx_bin directory with the full version’s mlnet (in lnx_bin). Do take note to kill the core through the web interface. Have fun with the release.

    3. Thanks again shadow, tomorrow i try :)

    4. Hi shadow, my dlink is arrived….great object! I’ve just install mldonkey and i’ve replace the mlnet file…nice! Edonkey and torrent working pretty good:) I’ve only 2-3 question! When i kill the core, exist a command to wake-up again the core? Now i reboot the nas every time..:( I’ve read 2-3 times the downloads.ini, but i don’t see the line for change the incoming folder for torrents and the “share” folder for edonkey…Thanks again

    5. Cipo_Italy, to run mldonkey, simple execute the mlnet.sh file found in /mnt/HD_a2.

      /mnt/HD_a2 # ./mlnet.sh

Incoming folder and stuffs are fixed to directories in /mnt/HD_a2/mldonkey but you can make use of the file_complete_cmd to move files out. Check out other post in the DNS-323 category. You should be able to find one.

Have fun with your new toy. :)

    6. Hi shadow thanks again for your help, all works great (also file_complete_cmd)! I love my dlink-box:)

Can i send u a bottle of a very good italian red wine!?:)

    7. Cipo_Italy, welcome. :) The file_complete_cmd is just a sample code (from me) and you can choose to work on it and share with others. ;) The red wine sounds good but thanks for the offer. Delivering it would be expensive. :)

    9. hi shadowandy,

you are doing really great job!

2.9.2_real_simple is working just fine on newer 1.04_release firmware.

The only issue with LMdonkey is that it cannot handle torrents which contains files or folders in national characters.

      Is this problem common?

    10. Hi, just bumped to your site.
      Can i ask a newb question…
Can i install the mldonkey real simple to linksys nas200?
      Thx

    11. hi,
probibly a stupid question, but i’am not able to solve this, i was hoping you can ;-) i installed the 292_realsimple on my CH3SNAS and getting the message in the webgui “No searchable networks enabled”.
i tested the MLDONKY windows version on my laptop (connecting to same router) and here all is working, do you have an explaination for this?

      thanks in advance,

      Frank

    12. henox,

unfortunately, this MLDonkey doesn’t support Linksys NAS200

    13. Hi, thanx for 292 real simple, really great work much appreciated when i dont know so much about linux, but i have 2 questions, when i restart the 323 box torrents map is getting wrong permissions so i cant acces it thru ftp and i have to change it with chmod every time is that normal?
And after i istalled mldonkey the disks never spinn down (hibernate) as it did before, and i havent addad any torrents yet just clean install any way to fix that?
      thanks in advance,

      john

    14. dotcom,

you could try writing a bash shell script to set the permission for the folders.

The MLDonkey monitors the torrent folder for .torrent files every now and then for auto downloads hence the disk doesn’t spins down. What you can do is change the frequency it checks the folder.

    15. Thx shadowandy, now the permission is fixed with shell script, but cant find where to change the frequency of torrents monitor, is it in options or do i have to change in some *.ini file?

    16. dotcom,

The frequency of the torrent monitors can be found in the options. The variable used is “BT-import_new_torrents_interval”

    17. Hi,
Thanx you so much for making my impulse-aquisition into a little dreammachine. I’m using your “real simple” on my Conceptronic Grab’n Go, making it’s name more than an empty promise.

I have ’some’ experience with linux, I can install and mount a new drive, (most of the time) but I am mostly a trial-and-error kind of guy (lots of tries, lots of errors). The endresult of which is that I do have a few questions:
      1) mlnet seems to be running as root, is that secure? (I think the awnser is no, but how to fix it)
      2) Telnet seems to be running as root by default, is that secure?
      3) (steplist)
      I reboot the machine.
      Wait for everything to startup.
      Login using telnet.
I use top to check the processes running.
      I spot: mlnet 97% cpu (yeah !!!!)
I use Sancho on my windows machine to connect.
      Everything looks ok.
Back again to the telnet, and top.
Now I spot 3 mlnet processes all using 33%.
I shutdown sancho, still 3 processes. (hmmm?)
      I restart Sancho, (no change)
      I kill core using Sancho.
      No processes running.
Question, what the %&# are those two processes for, and why do they need so much cpu? (or is everything running fine?

Any clarification would be most helpfull,
      Kabwla.

    19. Kabwla,

To run as other users, you might wish to toy with /etc/passwd.

Regarding the 3 processes, you might wish to approach mldonkey’s official site to find out more about it.

    20. jarek,

if you had run the mldonkey using mlnet.sh. It would have set the envionment variables and run off the directory I have set instead of “/home/root/.mldonkey”.

    21. shadowandy: thanks it works now :) all the best in new year :)

    22. Hi Shadow,

Could you help me how I should configure mldonkey to seed files after they are downloaded 100%?

      thx your support in advance,

      DV

    23. anyone knows if there are tcp ports need forwarding for the different networks?

    24. DonVito,

      Check out this wiki page

    25. ronjon,

Certainly! Different plugin requires different ports to be forwarded on your router. :)

    26. well… i copied the file/folders from the 2.9.2 zip file and placed it into the first volume.

      1.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/kairin/2162313581/

i have 2 hard disks in the DNS323. how do i get it to download into the second volume? right now the first volume is the bigger hard disk. how do i make sure that files are downloaded into the second hard disk?

      2.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/kairin/2163114514/

i merely downloaded the 2.9.2 real simple, and merely unzipped and copied over via “copy & paste”

      restart and that’s all.

      anything else i should configure?

3.) very much appreciate ur assistance. i don’t know anything about linux seriously.

    27. karin,

      1) I just made a new post regarding this.

      2) The real simple edition sets up the necessary files to run the mldonkey. You would still need to configure the ports for use and perhaps do port forwarding on your router (if you have one)

      3) You are welcome. :)

    28. MLDonkey for DNS-313

Some users has feedback to me that DNS-313 can also run the MLDonkey compiled for DNS-323 (due to the similar architecture)! MLDonkey would allow your DNS-323, DNS-313, CH3NAS, DNS-312H, etc to use various Peer-to-Peer protocols like Bittorrent, edonke…

    29. Hi shadow, how are you? Happy new year! 45 days of uptime of my mldonkey on dns-323 and over 200gb of data exchange by torrent client :) Thanks for all….and check your paypal ;))

    30. Hi Cipo_Italy!

Thanks for treating me to Starbucks. ;) Wow, your mldonkey uptime is impressive! I am waiting for new MLDonkey releases to compile and hope they will solve the tracker reporting bug.

      shadowandy:
To run as other users, you might wish to toy with /etc/passwd.

      Andy,
Mldonkey dies have a ‘runasuser’setting, and I have been toying with it. The result is:
I used a user I’ve created through the configuration tools provided by the manifacturer.
      I start MLDonkey. … wait a little.
the log file reports it is running as the user provided.
The processlist reports no mlnet-process running.
I’ve toyed around with the groups/users/mode of the mldonkey-directory, it still wont run.’
I am pretty sure it is a right’s problem but the logfile does not provide enough feedback to fix it.

I Will let it rest for now since I have a more urgent problem:
I Have suffered a powerfailure and as a result some sectors (nodes) are damaged. I come to this conclussion since the mlnet.log keeps reporting certain downloaded blocks could not be written (always the same blocks) and downloaded files will freeze on the same position everytime during playback.

The big question, how do I repair the filesystem.
Big question split up in smaller questions:
      1) running fschk on a mounted fs is dangerous, but I cannot unmount /mnt/HD_a2 because it’s busy.
      2) At the moment I would be glad wit getting just a repost of the errors, however documentation states that fsck.minix does not support the -N (or -n) option.
      3) what is the actual fs-type the DNS-323 uses, or is autodetect fine?
      4) Is there a version (or could we make one) of the funplug that checks the filessystem before mounting?
      5) I thought about fixing the errors by buying a second drive, copy the data, and reformat the disk. However this would be costly and Some data won’t copy because of the errors. I am looking for a more elegant sollution.

I know you are busy, but if you do know an awnser(a Link would be good enough), I would apreciate it very much.
