True Offline Maps for iPhone (12)

    March 20th, 2010

Been searching for ways to create offline maps for my next overseas trip. There are quite a few software that fits the requirement – offmaps, offlinemaps. But none of these have the capability to do offline routing between 2 POI.

Preferred the offlinemaps over offmaps due to the friendlier and more detailed Google Maps. Offmaps actually uses Openstreet Maps which lacks alot of details – small roads are not named, buildings are not shown.

While searching for better maps application for the iPhone. Saw quite a few spam across several forums and blogs mentioning about a new app that is able to browse map and create routes offline. Oh boy, I was overjoyed! The application is call True Offline Maps.

Several friends and I installed True Offline Maps. The verdict? It is utter disappointment. The main drawback is you can only download a tiny portion of the map. The area you can download is much smaller than the area of Singapore. The next worst thing is – it can only download a single maps at a time. Yes. The previous downloaded map will be replaced. The downloaded POI is amazingly limited with no option for user to specify new POI.

This application don’t deserve the $$ now. Probably wait for it to mature. For now, stick to offline maps.

    1. I think I used one of the offline map during my HK trip. But too bad, I forgotten the name. I think there’s routing enabled. I will let u know when I recall anything.

    2. That would be cool!

    3. use PAPAGO!

    4. hawshy,

PAPAGO doesn’t route public transport routes right?

    6. Hi I’m the developer of True Offline Maps. A pity you didn’t find it useful, several people have.
As I mentioned, in the web page, I will be adding multi map feature very soon. And, also mentioned in the page is the addition of a new offline poi editor. If you have any other feedback don’t hesitate to let me know…

All this will happen in no more than a couple of weeks…

      Thanks,
      Ignacio.

    7. IgnacioZ,

Great to hear that support for multi-maps & POI editor will be out soon. Guess Openstreet Maps will remain due to copyright issues with Google Maps.

      Thanks for dropping by. :)

    8. In order to have everybody happy, the multi map feature update will be ready in no more than 2-3 weeks max!!!

      Cheers,
      Ignacio.

    9. As promised, the new version of True Maps with Multi Maps support was accepted and is available on the store :)

      Cheers,
      Ignacio

    10. I am using True Maps, but cannot figure out how to download the map data for a given area.

Right now, I am reduced to zooming in to the desired level of detail and panning around the area I am interested in: Totally unworkable IMHO.

Seems like there must be a way to, say, zoom out so that the desired area appears on the screen; then tell the application to download all map data in that area down at all detail levels.

I guess the size of the area would be limited by available memory, but I’m thinking in terms of 20-30 miles diagonal max.

    11. Granted you can have multiple maps but only ONE can be used at a time making the app virtually unusable. Unless the author includes the possibility of downloading larger areas I do not see what purpose this app serves.

    12. Hi!
I have added a new application: True Offline Maps 2 with a new collaborative POI editor.

@Pete: you can download a large area (20/30 miles). Please take a look at the documentation in the webpage.

@Rod: I’m planning on adding more area to be appended to previous downloaded maps, so that should solve your issue.
