深度OS (Shendu OS) for Huawei Honor U8860

深度OS (Shendu OS) for Huawei Honor U8860

Recently I flashed my Huawei Honor U8860 to third party firmware. Why? Simply because the stock firmware from Huawei is too sluggish for daily usage. Third party firmwares/ROMs like the CM10 and Shendu OS (深度OS) is a lot faster on the Huawei Honor U8860. So if you are looking for a snappy Android experience on the Huawei Honor U8860, this guide is probably for you.

I have put together a third party firmware/ROM flashing guide for the Huawei Honor U8860. For this guide, I am using Shendu OS (深度OS) as an example. If you want to try out other firmwares (e.g CyanogenMod 10), simply replace the files in Step 5 of the guide with the respective files.

    Warning

Flashing to third party firmwares/ROMs will void your warranty. The guide is written based on my experience of flashing third party firmware onto the Huawei Honor U8860.

There are always risk(s) involved when toying with unofficial firmwares/ROMs. Hence, you need to know what you are doing. Should you break your Huawei Honor U8860, you can not hold the author, me, responsible.

There are always chances that custom firmwares/ROMs are unstable so use it at your own risk. Do your own research on the usage experience of others before jumping into a particular third party firmware/ROM.

By flashing a custom firmware/ROM, you may lose ALL data on your phone. In this guide, we are doing a factory wipe so you will lose all your data. So do the necessary backups.

Only proceed if you are clear about what you are going to do. Take care and have fun!

    Required equipments

    1. Huawei Honor U8860 on official Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread
    2. MicroSD card that is readable on the Huawei Honor U8860
    3. MicroUSB cable
    4. Archiving/Unarchiving software like 7-zip

    Required Files

    1. dload_B929rus.rar (MD5 = 7264f7ad3bd7eebd298a8be978823734)
Patch to allow downgrading from newer builds to B919. Download from the link here.
    2. B919_official.7z (MD5 = 22e056037595dd631a19f794b469d996)
This is the official Huawei Honor U8860 Stock ROM (B919). Download from here. Added a mirror (download both parts).
    3. recovery_V6.0.1.0_Touch.zip (MD5 = 3c8b3d5907a1a4264d041e4f190b4b14)
ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery Touch for Huawei Honor U8860. This is essentially the recovery menu that allows you to flash third party ROM. Download from here.
    4. ShenduOS for Huawei Honor U8860 (华为u8860)
Download the DEV (开发版) from here.
    5. Gapps for Jelly Bean
Download the latest gapps for Jelly Bean from here. The latest currently is 20121011.

    Before you proceed

Ensure that your Huawei Honor U8860 is sufficiently charged (more than 90% battery). The last thing that you want is battery running flat in the middle of any firmware updates.

    What will you be expecting

The process is actually pretty straight forward with a little bit of waiting here and there. If you are on the official Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.X) build, the procedure is as follow:

    1. Preparing the phone (turning off fast boot).
    2. Flashing the patch (dload_B929rus.rar).
    3. Flashing the official firmware (B919_official.7z).
    4. Replacing the recovery menu (recovery_V6.0.1.0_Touch.zip).
    5. Installing ShenduOS and gapps.

Yes, that is it. If you are on Huawei Honor official Gingerbread (2.3.X). You will be skipping step 2.

Now that you know what you are expecting. Lets proceed. Before that, another set of warning.

    Step 1: Preparing the phone

Firstly, we will need to turn off fast boot because if you do not do so, the phone will do a warm boot and bypass the key press sequences you will be doing in the later sections.

To turn off fast boot, simply:

    1. Navigate to Settings –> Application.
    2. Uncheck “fast boot”.

Step 2: Flashing the patch (dload_B926rus.rar)

Now, we will be patching the system to allow the downgrading of firmware to B919 in the next section. Extract the contents of the downloaded file dload_B929rus.rar and place the dload folder in your microSD card.

    Preparing the contents for flashing

    1. Download the file dload_B929rus.rar.
    2. Remove or rename any existing dload folder on the microSD card.
    3. Extract the contents of the archive to the root of the microSD card.
    4. Ensure that there is a new folder named “dload” (without the quotes) created.
    5. Within the “dload” folder, ensure that there is a file named “UPDATE.APP” (without the quotes). It is a small file (~5 KB).

    Flashing the update

    1. Insert the microSD card into the Huawei Honor U8860. Do not power on the Huawei Honor U8860.
    2. While the Huawei Honor U8860 is powered off, apply the update by pressing and holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power. Release the buttons when it starts flashing.
The Huawei Honor U8860 should power on and reflect flashing 1/1.
    3. Wait for the flashing the flashing to complete before proceeding.

Step 3: Flashing the official firmware (B919_official.7z)

In this section, we will be flashing the phone to the official B919 build. Why this build? It is because the bootloader in this build allow us to install the custom recovery menu (ClockworkMod Recovery) that is required to flash third party firmwares/ROMs.

    Preparing the contents for flashing

    1. Remove the “dload” folder on the microSD card.
    2. Download the file B919_official.7z.
    3. Extract the contents of the archive to the root of the microSD card.
    4. Ensure that a new folder named “dload” (without the quotes) is created.
    5. Within the “dload” folder, ensure that there are 2 files named “UPDATE.APP” and “UPDATE_CUST.APP” (without the quotes).

    Flashing the update

    1. Insert the microSD card into the Huawei U8860. Do not power on the Huawei Honor U8860.
    2. While the Huawei Honor U8860 is powered off, apply the update by pressing and holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power. Release the buttons when it starts flashing.
The Huawei Honor U8860 should power on and reflect flashing 1/2, followed by 2/2.
    3. Wait for the flashing the flashing to complete before proceeding.

Step 4: Replacing the recovery menu (recovery_V6.0.1.0_Touch.zip)

In this section, we will be replacing the recovery menu. Do proceed with caution as the recovery menu is your life line. If you name the file wrongly, you will lose your only chance of performing any recovery!

    Preparing the contents for flashing

    1. Extract the contents of recovery_V6.0.1.0_Touch.zip onto your computer (not to the root of the microSD card).
    2. A file named “recovery.img” (without the quotes) should have been extracted.
    3. Remove the microSD card from your Huawei Honor U8860.

    Changing the recovery menu

    1. Ensure the microSD card is removed from the Huawei Honor U8860. We do not want it to be in the phone.
    2. Power on the Huawei Honor U8860 by pressing and holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power. Release the buttons when you see a pink screen.
    3. While the Huawei Honor U8860 is showing the pink screen, connect it to your computer using a microUSB cable.
A new disk drive should appear on your computer. The new disk drive should contain a folder named “image”.
    4. Using a file explorer, navigate to the “image” (without the quotes) folder.
    5. Within the “image” folder, look for a file named “recovery.img” (without the quotes).
    6. Rename the existing file “recovery.img” to “recovery.org” (without the quotes).
Within the “image” folder, you should see “recovery.org” instead of “recovery.img”.
    7. With the “recovery.img” you have extracted from recovery_V6.0.1.0_Touch.zip earlier, copy “recovery.img” into the “image” folder.
Both the files “recovery.org” and “recovery.img” should be in the same folder.

Warning: Ensure that you have a file named “recovery.img” in the “image” folder. This is very important!

    8. Safely unmount the disk drive from your computer.
    9. Disconnect the microUSB cable from the Huawei Honor U8860.
    10. Shut down the phone by pulling out the battery.

Step 5: Installing ShenduOS and gapps

In this final section, we will install ShenduOS ROM and Gapps to your Huawei Honor U8860.

    Preparing the contents for flashing

    1. Download the ShenduOS and gapps to the root of your microSD card. Do not extract them. Leave them in as .zip archives.
    2. Insert the microSD card into your Huawei Honor U8860.

Booting to your new custom recovery menu

    1. Power on the Huawei Honor U8860 by pressing and holding Vol Up + Power until you see the CWMR (ClockworkMod Recovery) Touch menu. It will take a while to boot.

Wiping the phone for Shendu OS

At the bottom of the screen you will see 4 buttons – move down, move up, back, select. You will make use of these on screen buttons for all the operations

    1. Navigate to and select “wipe data/factory reset“. Confirm the selection on the following screen.
    2. A data and factory wipe should take place. Let it complete before proceeding.
    3. Return back to the main menu using the “back” button.
    4. Navigate to and select “wipe cache partition“. Confirm the selection on the following screen.
The phone will proceed to wipe the cache. Let it complete before proceeding.
    5. Return to the CMWR main menu using the “back” button.
    6. Navigate to “advanced” –> “Wipe Dalvik Cache“.
    7. Select “Wipe Dalvik Cache“. Confirm the selection on the following screen.
The phone will be wiping the Dalvik Cache. Let it complete before proceeeding.
    8. The phone has been factory resetted. Lets proceed to flashing Shendu OS.

    Flashing Shendu OS

    1. Using the CWMR menu, navigate to “install zip from sdcard” –> “choose zip from sdcard“.
    2. Select the Shendu OS zip file you have downloaded earlier and confirm the selection.
Allow the flashing to complete before proceeding.
    3. Return to the CWMR main menu using the “back” button.
    4. Using the CWMR menu, navigate to “install zip from sdcard” –> “choose zip from sdcard“.
    5. Select the gapps zip file you have downloaded earlier and confirm the selection.
Allow the flashing to complete before proceeding.
    6. Return to the CWMR main menu using the “back” bytton.
    7. Reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now“.

The phone should reboot into Shendu OS. The first boot will take slightly longer so be patient.

Have fun with your new custom ROM on your Huawei Honor U8860!

    Additional tips and tricks

    1. After flashing Shendu OS, the recovery menu has been replaced with a Chinese one. You can change it back to the English CWMR touch by following Step 4 only. Yes, just replace the recovery.img. Do not replace your existing recovery.org.
    2. You are getting random popup stating “receive text messages (MMS) denyed”. This is a bug with the Shendu OS.
      To fix it, simply:
      i. Download and install SuperSU from Play Store
ii. Run SuperSU and ensure that it is set up correctly
iii. Download and install Titanium Backup from Play Store
iv. Use Titanium Backup to uninstall SuperUser
      v. Reboot
If you are having Titanium Backup Pro, you can just freeze SuperUser without uninstalling it.
    3. Don’t need some of the applications that comes with the firmware/ROM?
You can disable the applications under Settings –> Applications. Not all of them support this though.

    3. Not sure why but it seems the B919_official.7z you provided is not working. I cant extract the dload folder and winrar keeps getting error.

    4. name,

Try to use a md5 hash tool to ensure the file has been downloaded completely. You can refer to the md5 hash that I have provided in the guide.

If it matches and still fails to extract, try using the 7-zip application I had recommended in the guide too.

    5. Great. I have no problem following the guide, and most important, I succeeded!

    6. Hi,

    8. Hey Step 3) in the requirements, the link for the ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery Touch for Huawei Honor U8860 is not working.

      Do you have another mirror?

    9. Any idea how I can restock to ICS from Shendu? I no longer need the phone and intend to pass it to a friend. Think it’ll be better for him to start off with the official ROM.

    10. cw,

You got to restore the original recovery which you have backed up earlier.

After restoring, just do the normal original firmware upgrade procedure.

    11. found an alternate location for the CWM – can be got from http://www.huaweihonor.blogspot.com.au (Scroll down a bit – there is a blog post and a link)- had to go through some adfly windows to get it, but did get it.

    18. Hi,

It is going oke till step 5.
      Here is the instalation aborted.
I have done all steps good.

      Can you help me?

    19. Jeroen,

Can you share at which part of Step 5 was it aborted? During the flashing of Shendu zip file? Have you ensured that the files have been completely downloaded? You can easily test by trying to extract the zip archive using your computer. If you cannot extract using your computer, something is wrong with the download.

    20. Hi,

I’m currently on a custom rom and I wish to flash back to b919 stock rom. How do I go about doing it? Thanks in advance!

    22. need help!!
it takes too long load when I do to Step 3: Flashing the official firmware (B919_official.7z)…
      anyone can help??

    23. Hi,

I read about this operation and it seems that to use the CWM we need a bootloader first. Is that what the first step is? I’m just making sure. I already bricked my phone and I dont want to do it again. =)

    24. I did it. Really easy and effective guide. I installed Cyanogenmod 10 on my Huawei u8860. Thank you very much for the help.

    25. The ROM is very good, but most of the settings page is in Chinese!!
