Surfing on iPod Touch through Bluetooth? (7)

    March 22nd, 2010 | Tags: | Posted in Tech

Surfing on the go using iPod Touch is pretty much a norm nowadays with mobile wifi devices like the mifi or handphones installed with software like JoikuSpot or PDANet.

Do you know you can surf Internet through bluetooth? Apparently not a lot of people know of Bluetooth DUN (Dialup Networking). Most modern handphones with bluetooth supports DUN. Basically, the idea is to utilize bluetooth DUN to allow your iPod Touch (generation 2 and newer) surf Internet through it. Why only iPod Touch generation 2 and newer? It’s because iPod Touch generation 1 lacks the bluetooth feature.

What are the plus points? It goes easy on the batteries. Wifi drains batteries faster than bluetooth. So if you are like me using JoikuSpot, you will notice that your handphone’s juices runs out pretty quickly. Same goes for the iPod Touch.

Waiting for iBluever to be announced! Oops, forgot to mention what it is about. It is an application that allows your iPod Touch to recognize Bluetooth DUN. Bluetooth stack on the iPod Touch is limited to multimedia devices like headphones (officially). So these apps actually allow more bluetooth devices to be recognized. My iPod Touch now recognizes handphones/computers so I can bluetooth files around. It also recognize my bluetooth GPS receiver so I can navigate my way round unknown territories.

Oh before I forgot, iBluever is likely to be a Cydia app.

    M1 SunSurf mobile broadband = 56kbps service? (3)

    March 21st, 2010 | Tags: , , , | Posted in Tech

M1 mobile broadband (Sunsurf) speed is getting from bad to worst lately. Did a short study last year on M1 Mobile Broadband Speed and it was quite terrible. I am suppose to squeeze about up to 7.2Mbps for download and 2Mbps for upload but I have problem hitting 1Mbps download on most if not all occasions.

Was contemplating on whether to sign up for multi-sim services so that I could use the data package tied to my handphone plan when I am outside. At first I thought the slow speed was due to my handphone (a E51). Searched online and found out that there are M1 customers complaining about their slow speeds as well. Swapped the M1 sim card and inserted a Singtel sim card into my E51. Oh man, websites are loading, mails are coming in, contacts and calendar entries are synchronized instantly.

Considering to sign up for mobile broadband? Try other telcos unless M1 announce a major upgrade to their infrastructure.

True Offline Maps for iPhone (12)

March 20th, 2010 | Posted in Life, Tech

Been searching for ways to create offline maps for my next overseas trip. There are quite a few software that fits the requirement – offmaps, offlinemaps. But none of these have the capability to do offline routing between 2 POI.

Preferred the offlinemaps over offmaps due to the friendlier and more detailed Google Maps. Offmaps actually uses Openstreet Maps which lacks alot of details – small roads are not named, buildings are not shown.

While searching for better maps application for the iPhone. Saw quite a few spam across several forums and blogs mentioning about a new app that is able to browse map and create routes offline. Oh boy, I was overjoyed! The application is call True Offline Maps.

Several friends and I installed True Offline Maps. The verdict? It is utter disappointment. The main drawback is you can only download a tiny portion of the map. The area you can download is much smaller than the area of Singapore. The next worst thing is – it can only download a single maps at a time. Yes. The previous downloaded map will be replaced. The downloaded POI is amazingly limited with no option for user to specify new POI.

This application don’t deserve the $$ now. Probably wait for it to mature. For now, stick to offline maps.

Gorillapod – The ultimate travel tripod (-)

Tadaa! The Gorillapod for Compact Camera!

The Gorillapod holds up compact cameras weighing up to 325g comfortably. Use your imagination to twist and twirl its flexible, wrappable legs to cling your camera to virtually any surface!

Bought it recently after I toyed with it at Cathay Photos. It comes with a quick release clip. The clip stays on your camera while the Gorillapod stays in your bag when it is not needed. When attached, a lock ring ensures that your camera is securely attached to the pod.

The rubberized rings and footgrips provides extra stability when it is on uneven ground / wrapped onto poles. More details can be found from Joby.

Nokia X6 – the perfect entertainment device? (2)

    March 11th, 2010 | Tags: , , , , , , | Posted in Reviews, Tech

The Nokia X6 is the latest Symbian-based music phone with 32GB of on-board memory, 3.2inch capacitive touch screen, packed in a candy bar form-factor. Best of all, Nokia has thrown in Comes with Music for the 32GB version, allowing you access to the hottest hits anytime.

The 13.8mm thick Nokia X6 doesn’t come with any slider keyboard. In fact, physical keyboard is redundant due to the capacitive touch screen. Why have a physical keyboard when you have a on screen keyboard? Buttons are also kept to a minimal on the Nokia X6 – Power & USB on the top; Volume controls, unlock & camera on the right side; and SIM card slot on the left of it screen. That’s all.
