Everybody thought that the outcome of the case between Odex and Pacific Internet would be the same as Singnet and Starhub. But most of us were wrong in thinking that way – Pacific Internet doesn’t have to release subscribers’ information to Odex.

Odex has succesfully gotten subscribers’ information from Singnet and Starhub through court orders. It was mentioned that Singnet and Starhub didn’t really put up a fight for the case and handed over the required information. Seems like there isn’t much privacy in Singapore. Any piece of information can be dugged up easily. So do consider hard if you plan to start a business in Singapore, you will never know if your competitors can easily get confidential information (transmitted over Internet) through your Internet Service Provider(s). Why? Because the major players (of internet service provider) don’t really care about privacy of its customers (in Odex case).

With the Odex Saga, it seems users realized that alot of Intellecture Properties rights are not stated fully or rather the clauses are not really fair to the customers in Singapore. Lack of fair use is one of the examples – owning a audio CD doesn’t not mean that you automatically own the digital version (mp3, ogg) of the songs in the CD. Yes, you would need to seperately purchase them. Time to junk away those mp3 players unless you bought those songs online through iTunes.

Oh yes, Odex should implement something like iTunes for anime so that users can get the latest fix of animes online fast.

Seems like a handful of locals are boycotting ODEX for their recent move of suing anybody who download anime in Singapore (link).

For me, I wouldn’t say that I would boycott ODEX. Why? Cos I simply won’t try their releases. Low quality animation with erroneous subtitles. Why buy from them? I would rather get it online to get a better quality work.

Good thing is that there is always youtube.

People have been receiving mails from these guys. Odex is a local (Singapore) company that has liscensed several animes and they are stamping out piracy! The popular anime Bleach is liscensed by them. These news will certainly make people think that bittorrent is illegal. Well let me say it once again, “Bittorrent itself is not illegal, it is the content”. I still remember I get flamed and bashed in a online forum when I mentioned that Bittorrent is not illegal.
