PowerToys: SyncToy

SyncToy for Windows XP is a very cool program to have if you are always on the move and got lots of data to sync.

Personally I like to backup my school stuffs back onto my desktop. Traditional way of doing it would be writing a dos batch file to copy files from my laptop and dumping it onto my desktop (\\ELF) / server (\\Devil) thru UNC naming convention. Most likely users would use the xcopy or copy feature with overwrite without asking for comfirmation option.

The downpoints

  • Movement of files on source PC will create a messy outcome on the destination PC (duplication of files)
  • All files get dumped onto the destination (for your information, my GEM mod project is already a few GB). Therefore making it inefficient
  • And the list goes on …

By using SyncToy, all these problems are solved. It detect which files are moved and it moves the file on the destination as well. How cool is that!!!!

It also wont copy files that are already on the destination. Making it efficient. Synching is faster in this case. With different type of sync settings, you can choose it to contribute both ways, for example if you were to work on both PC and laptop. Newer files will be replicated onto the other. 😉

Got quite a few PowerToys on my laptop now. Oh something to add on to all these, PowerToys are free. 🙂
