Ambi Climate Review – Smart Add-on for your Air Conditioner

Ambi Climate is a small Internet-of-Things (IoT) device that makes your existing remote-controlled air conditioner smart. It learns about your habits and preferences; and auto adjusts the air conditioner for the ideal temperature for your comfort. In fact, you will (potentially) yield energy savings, resulting in cost savings in the long run.

I got this pre-owned Ambi Climate from Lester Chan for my bedroom to address the issue of the room getting too cold in the middle of the night during sudden downpours. Just for your info, sudden downpours occur quite frequently in a tropical island like Singapore.

Design and Setup

The Smart Add-On for your Air Conditioner

On the front of Ambi Climate is a bunch of LED statuses for wireless connectivity, connection to Ambi Cloud, etc. The round jewel-like thing on the lower left is the motion sensor that determines the activity level in the room to adjust the air conditioner appropriately for your indoor comfort.

The black top actually houses the infra-red (IR) emitters and sensors to control your air conditioner and to read the IR commands fired from your remote.

The Ambi Climate is capable of sensing light to determine the thermal impact of radiant heat on your comfort.

At the back is the Micro-USB power port, USB port and temperature and humidity sensor

Flipping the Ambi Climate around, you will find a microUSB port for powering it. The vents near the side actually have temperature and humidity sensors behind.

Nothing beneath the Ambi Climate. Just details on the product.

There is nothing at on bottom of Ambi Climate except for a sticker with details of the product.

Ambi Climate is designed to be controlled through your smartphone (Android, iOS). Yes, you will need to install the Ambi Climate app on your smartphone in order to set up the Ambi Climate.

The setup is pretty straightforward with the guided setup process. You will be guided to set up the 2.4 GHz WiFi network for the Ambi Climate to use, set your air conditioner model and the location of the device. That’s it!

What it does

Ambi Climate offers four operation modes:

  1. Comfort. This essentially lets Ambi Climate control the temperature of the air conditioner. It learns your comfort level through your feedbacks. Basically, you tell Ambi Climate if you are feeling “too hot”/ “too warm” / “a bit warm” / “comfortable” / “a bit cold” / “too cold” / “freezing” with the current climate in the room. It will then attempt to set the appropriate air conditioner setting base on the environment feedbacks (via the sensors).
  2. Temperature. Basically with this you will set a target temperate to maintain for the room.
  3. Away. This is mainly for you to control the temperature and/ or humidity of the room while you are away. You might have some items that are sensitive to changes in these two environment parameters and this mode might nail it.
  4. Manual. Just the plain old remote control features with no artificial intelligence, smartness, etc.

So does it work?

Well, of course Ambi Climate does work! It is rainy during this period of the year in Singapore and I am glad that Ambi Climate maintained a comfortable environment while we are asleep.

AI setting the air conditioner at 27/ 28 degrees celcius while maintaining the ambient room temperature at 24 degrees celcius.

This AI controlled temperature also translates into energy savings as the air conditioner is not cooling the intake air as much as it would be in manual operation. Energy savings translate into cost savings.

I don’t know about your air conditioner but mine seems to blow cooler air out when the outside air temperature is lower despite setting at the same temperature setting. As a result, the room gets too cold when it is raining heavily. If we were to set the air conditioner at a higher temperature setting, the room will get too warm if the rain stops. I guess this is a first world problem.

Hence in the event that it rains suddenly, the Ambi Climate sets a higher air conditioner temperature while maintaining the ambient room temperature at 24 degrees celcius. Cool air gets circulated without freezing us out. Nice! That is what happened on a few nights over the past week.

The Ambi Climate works pretty well for tropical countries. Well, it would work for you (in temperate countries) if you have the need to maintain the room at a certain temperature for comfort. The great thing is Ambi Climate controls your existing air conditioner via infra-red (IR) and do not require you to rewire your system.

Just in case you are interested about the price I got it for. I got this pre-owned Ambi Climate for S$120. The retailer in Singapore is selling it for S$279 (Astro Sports – Ambi Climate).
